The Hughes for America pledge drive

From now on, I'll refer to my situation as being FUNemployed. OK? Because what are we if we can't have fun, right? We'd be Republicans, that's who. Speaking of Republicans, the president once called having three jobs "uniquely American." I wonder what he would call having no jobs? Probably just "American," since being unemployed is a fairly common thing under the Bush administration. Anyway.

So yeah, I've been, as they say, downsized. Though it's funny, I'm still over six feet tall and don't seem to have lost any weight. Hair maybe, but not weight. But now I have more time to devote to this site and, well, finding a job. I've had some very promising conversations already, by the way.

If you look over to the top left (or the bottom of this post), you'll notice I've had a sidebar devoted to supporting this site. Until now, I had been hesitant to appeal in this space for your help. Now that, for the time being, this site is my sole source of income, I've decided to politely ask for your assistance with a few specific goals. They call this "blegging" in the blogosphere. A nice mix of begging and blogging.

Well, here's my bleg. If you're one of my readers and you appreciate the product I deliver, I would ask you to consider making a donation to the site. Now, if you don't have a lot of money, please don't donate. There are people far worse off than me, and I still hope to be a voice for them as well. Your generosity, however, will help a great deal while I work hard to find my next stop. I plan on putting donations toward my monthly ISP bills, the costs associated with hosting this site and helping make a down payment on the laptop I plan on purchasing to replace my aging iMac. So, as you can tell, it's not just spending money. It will be money well spent.

Think of how much you pay each year for magazines. Or newspapers. If you read a newspaper every day, think of what you're spending for your information. A decent amount of great people consider this site another such resource. So if you like what I do and want to help me keep doing it, I would very much appreciate your support. Contributions, news tips and e-mails have consistently proven that you, my readers, are among the nicest, most well-informed, active individuals I've ever met, and I thank every one of you for your readership!

Though this site is has only been around for approximately a year and a half, it has already seen more than 330,000 visitors. All thanks to you! Articles from this site have been linked to from some of the real industry giants, including Daily Kos, Crooks and Liars, AMERICAblog, MyDD, Hullabaloo and BuzzFlash, among others. I've also been lucky enough to have several articles published at Democratic Underground. One Hughes for America article even made it to "The Al Franken Show." And none of this would have happened without you.

So if you like what you've seen here so far, I can honestly say that things will only get better. You've been an amazing bunch and I've been consistently inspired to do that much better for you. I can't thank you enough; I'd run out of bandwidth if I could. So your support at this time would be much appreciated. Thank you!

If you have any questions about donating or wish to inquire about very affordable, very competitive freelance writing or graphic design, please e-mail me.

Survival Preparedness

Avoid credit card debt if you can!!!

Iran this month?!? STOCK UP ON MULTI-FLAVORED ENSURE LIQUID DIET (or equiv.)!

If you must invest -- Lots of Reynold's Wrap aluminum. Ten gallons of oil are needed to electrolytically refine a little aluminum bauxite!

Polyethylene tarp is pure polymerized gasoline -- not really cheap to make. Ultraviolet light degrades it. Get black or U.V. resistant type.

Keep that shotgun -- There will be looters.

Boil polyethylene containers to remove animal scents before hiding $20 bills under rocks. Make a damn map. NO METAL LIDS! New metal detectors are awesome.

Pray to Satan to take the damn Bush junta.

Aw friggit. When Yahoo starts masking out phrases like "First Amendment," you are probably going to need to be mobile. Where? I don't know. Maybe time to max out those cards and invest in a rather heavy-duty small moving van or utility van. With the weight-carrying capacity to haul a household fuel oil tank full of (presently) cheap low-test gasoline.

When the excrement comes down, get a sturdy COME-ALONG puller, and yank that big can of gas out out your basement (or whatever) up sturdy oak ramps into the van. You should be able to get across a continent or two with that (and reasonable mileage), if you must. (And you may well have to!!!)

I just saw that the Economic Policy Institute is looking for a graphic designer -- go to MaxSpeak, You Listen (maxspeak.org) and scroll down a bit.
